What constitutes Naturopathic therapy?
By Cornelis van Dalen ND Dip Hom
Naturopathy is an eclectic system of healthcare, which promotes the body's self-healing mechanism. (The word eclectic means: to borrow freely from various sources.) The modern Naturopath is defined as one who freely uses various treatments to restore health in the patient, according to the patient’s needs.
The task in healing is in accord with Samuel Hahnemann’s Organon of Medicine, §1: ‘The physician’s high and only mission is to restore the sick to health, to cure, as it is termed’. And §2: ‘…. the highest ideal of cure is rapid, gentle and permanent restoration of health….’.
As a Naturopath, I seek to bring you, the patient, back to health by restoring the body’s diminished ability to heal itself. Hippocrates (Greek physician c 460 – c 377 BC) called our innate healing force Vis Medicatrix Naturae.
To restore the healing force and to effect change for self healing, I use a three-fold approach:
1. Medicinal supplements – homoeopathic remedies, herbs, mineral therapy, Bach Flower remedies, nutrition, etc. This constitutes one aspect of therapy.
2. The application of other external modes of therapy – e.g. acupressure, massage, hydrotherapy (including enemas and baths) if deemed efficacious.
3. The third form of therapy is educational - becoming aware of self in the greater context of life. This means looking at life-style and attitude adjustments to address stress factors, and importantly, exercise and artistic/creative activities. This is building a new pathway of natural and wholesome living through understanding.
Disciplines and techniques:
Naturopathic Diagnosis: A detailed picture of the underlying energy of the body is investigated using various diagnostic tools:
The art of visual diagnosis: – the face has a relationship to the various organs of the body and underlying imbalances and functions can be seen.
The tongue and nails are also diagnosed giving another intimate picture of the internal workings of the body. The Pulse, while generally used to measure the heart rhythm or beat, it reveals many deeper and subtle aspects.
The Iris, in the Art of Iridology, is also viewed and shows our constitutional makeup and the condition of the body and mind. Additionally, your own description of symptoms and ailments are an important and vital part of case taking. Bio-medical tests and reports are considered.
Homoeopathy is energetic medicine
I am a practitioner of classical homoeopathy. This means ONE remedy (the most similar to the disease), and the ONE dose, which is repeated only if required.
Nutrition is the cornerstone to health and adjunct to the first prescription. Food has healing properties as well as nourishing the body and soul. When the energetics of foods (how food acts on the body – heating, cooling etc) is matched with the requirements of the body’s needs, healing can take place. This is the meaning of the Hippocratic axiom ‘let food be your medicine.’
Detoxification through proper elimination is a rule of health. We experience health when the channels of elimination are open; these are the bowels, liver, kidneys, lungs and skin. This is carefully monitored and is part of the healing and the initial crisis of healing.
Bio-chemic Tissue salts: Healing with the 12 cell salts or tissue salts devised by Dr Schussler in the 19th century. It is based on the recognition of the importance of minerals as essential components of the human body.
Bach Flower Remedies are the 38 flower remedies created by Dr Edward Bach. These are used for their invaluable effect on relief or harmonisation of emotional and mental states, which can hinder our healing and balanced judgements in everyday life.
Auricular Therapy is therapy applied to the ear. The use of acupuncture points on the ear is an invaluable aid to detoxification, relaxation and healing. Hopi ear candles are also used and effective in unblocking ears and provide soothing energy into the head area.
Shiatsu is Japanese meridian massage therapy using acupressure points on the surface of the body. I have spent the early years of therapeutic work in the practice of Zen Shiatsu. There is nothing more enjoyable, relaxing, rejuvenating and healing, than receiving a Shiatsu massage.
The Naturopathic principle that ‘Nature heals’ is largely forgotten in the world of modern medicine. We have become accustomed to modern drug treatments that override the understanding and realisation of our body’s own healing power. Without this in-built healing power, we would remain in a disease state.
Disease symptoms are an indication of the body’s attempt to rectify some internal disorder. Symptoms are not something to be suppressed with drugs or surgery. The cause still exists.
I see the patient in the context of health, and not from what disease he or she may be experiencing. It is everyone’s Divine right to be healthy to carry out our tasks and duties. When ill health intervenes, we must ask why this has occurred. Emotional outlook is a key to the maintenance of health and has a bearing on the recovery.
I have 20 years experience in the Naturopathic approach to health and well-being. As a published writer, articles have appeared in leading UK journals: Here’s Health, Natural Health & Well Being, Positive Health, Organic Life et al.
